Premiere of La Fiammeggiante Luce by the University of Missouri University Singers

The University Singers, "the most prominent choral representatives of the University of Missouri" directed by Paul Crabb, will give the premiere performance of La Fiammeggiante Luce (The Flaming Light). Composed for this concert -- which features guest conductor Peter Phillips of the Tallis Scholars, and repertoire by contemporary composers written in response to earlier (often 16th century) music or text -- this piece is a setting of 16th century Italian texts by St. Catherine de' Ricci (1522-1590) combined with remarkably similar texts taken from testimonies of American Shakers in 1842-3, describing miraculous visions. 7:00 pm, First Baptist Church, 1112 E. The Odyssey Chamber Music Series, in Columbia, Missouri, has announced the commission of a new work to be premiered in the Gala Concert presented on Friday, October 14. This composition, Some place where your spirit sounds, will feature tenor saxophone, played by my colleague at the University of Missouri, Leo Saguiguit, and a chamber ensemble: oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, cello and piano. A conversation last summer with Ed Gray, executive director of the Calumet Art Center, about my past work organizing New Chamber Music concerts for the Pine Mountain Music Festival, and also the beautiful performing space that recently became available at the CAC, led naturally to the idea of organizing a New Music concert at the CAC for summer 2011. Joining me, as composer and violist, for a program of recent music (including several world premieres) will be Libby Meyer, composer/violinist, Thomas Bjoraker, percussionist/composer, John Peiffer, hornist/composer, Christine Seitz, soprano, Jon Ensminger, piano, Sylvia Ensminger, violin, Pat Quimby, cello, Nathan R. Barber, composer, and Robert Suits, composer. An open rehearsal of some of the music from the program will be offered on the morning of the concert from 10 - 11:30 am. My new (2011) composition, Tempore Nobis, for 10 Bass Clarinets had its premiere at the XVI Curso Internacional de Clarinete - "Julián Menéndez" - 2011 at the Universidad de Salamanca, Ávila, Spain, performed by Clarinetes Bajos, which includes: Luis Gomes (Portugal), Lucas Cavelius (Germany), Sergio Fernández Diez-Picazo (Spain), William Hayter (USA), Alejandro Loveira (USA), Eric Man (Hong Kong), Eduardo Molero Illán (Spain), Ramón Moreno Monteagudo (Spain), Peter Nÿssen (Netherlands), Lucia Otaegui Guridi (Spain), Harmen Reygoudt (Belgium), Roberto Rodriguez Perales (Spain), Igor Urruchi Salas (Spain), Mutsumi Watanabe (Japan), Holger Werner (Germany), Matt Wurtzel (USA). This performance was conducted by Dutch bass clarinet activist Henri Bok who is participating as guest artist and master teacher. After the concert, Henri wrote to say, "The audience, the course/concert organizers, the 10 performers and the conductor LOVED your piece. In my opinion it was maybe the most amazing work of the whole concert...."

Paul Seitz will return to organize and host the New Chamber Music concert, July 14, Portage Lake United Chuch, Houghton, Michigan (near the Michigan Tech University campus) as part of the 2007 Pine Mountain Music Festival. The 2007 program (tentatively) will include performance by the Bergonzi String Quartet of Different Trains, by Steve Reich (which they recently performed for the composer). Oboist Jennet Ingle, with pianist Bernice Harbaugh, will perform the Michigan premiere of Concertino for Oboe and Orchestra, by Doug Lofstrom, composed especially for Jennet and premiered last March. Facets - Subtle Variations for Trumpet and Piano, by Steve Ingle (2007) will be premiered by Scott Quackenbush, trumpet, with the composer. New Green, by Robin Oye (2007) will be premiered by Leelo Basham, piccolo, and Michael Crawford, contrabass. Anders Dahlberg, bass, will perform with Paul Seitz, viola, in the premiere of Imaginary Dances (2007). Additional program pieces will be added here, as they are known.

A new piece, In Now, for solo bass clarinet is in progress for a concert and CD recording project by bass clarinet virtuoso Henri Bok which will be a "resume" of collaborations between Bok and many composers who have written music for him over the years. A concert of some of these pieces, including the world premiere of In Now, will be given on November 28 at the Theatre Lanteren/Venster in Rotterdam, Netherlands, as part of a celebration of Bok's 25 years as professor of bass clarinet at the the Rotterdam Superior Conservatoire.
