la fiammeggiante luce

In December 2011, my colleague, Dr. Paul Crabb, choral director at MU, invited me to compose a piece for a concert culminating a week-long residency by Peter Phillips, founder and music director of the Tallis Scholars. The concert, by the 50 voice University Singers, was being planned to include 16th century music and contemporary music written in response to earlier works. I composed a piece, la fiammeggiante luce with 16th century Italian text by the mystic Catherine D’ Ricci, combined with remarkably similar American English texts from the 1842-3 testimonies of several specific American Shaker women describing their own miraculous visions. I was humbled by the deep commitment of the singers and Dr. Crabb to the preparation of a very beautiful and fluent performance, on April 14, 2012, and by the positive comments, and spontaneous contributions to the final coachings of the ensemble, by Peter Phillips.
