New Chamber Music
at the Calumet Art Center
Friday, August 9, 2013, 7:30 pm, $8

Picture
The 2013 New Chamber Music Concert at the Calumet Art Center in Calumet Michigan, will feature premieres of new works by some of the composers and performing artists from our first two (2011 and 2012) seasons as well as a special focus on Calumet's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Copper Strike and the Italian Hall disaster.

In addition to the premieres of several new compositions, we will observe the centennial of 1913 events in Calumet with several excerpts from the opera The Children of the Keweenaw (music by Paul Seitz, libretto by Kathleen Masterson) - with a special emphasis on those parts of the opera based on oral history and other recorded testimony from Calumet residents alive during the 1913 strike.  Ann Campbell is our music director for this portion of the program.  More details about the artists involved will be added here soon.

Returning artists participating in premieres/performances include composer/percussionist Tom Bjoraker, cellist Pat Quimby, composer/guitarist/violist Paul Seitz, soprano Christine Seitz and pianist Jon Ensminger.  Joining these returning performers will be violinist Erica Bjoraker, orchestra director at Fort Atkinson, WI, High School and Middle School and vibraphonist Bri Trainor.

We will again be performing very recent compositions, including several world premieres, by composers with ties to the Upper Peninsula.  Anticipated world premieres include a new (2013) piece, TWO, for marimba and vibraphone, composed by Tom Bjoraker, and a new work by Alexandra M. Signor, Farewell to the Warriors (Do Not Weep), and other works.  Of course, some of these pieces are still being written, so the program information will be updated as we approach the date of the concert.  Admission to the event is $8.00.

The Calumet Art Center is wonderfully vibrant treasure for many reasons, starting with the rich variety of inspiring community programs offered in so many areas of the arts to students of all ages.  Beyond all of that, it is also a fantastic performing space with a newly expanded wooden stage in 2013, and a newly acquired grand piano.  We can't wait to get back to Calumet to make music at the CAC!
