In the Moment’s Light was composed in 1998 at the invitation of conductor Donald Schleicher (director of orchestras at the University of Illinois).  He asked me to compose a “five minute composition” that would be suitable for performance by the high school honors orchestras that he frequently conducted.  Completed in 1998, Maestro Schleicher conducted the  premiere performance by the Illinois Music Education District 7 (Chicago North Shore) Honors Symphony Orchestra.  Subsequently, it has been chosen for performance by the All State High School Symphony Orchestras of Delaware (conducted by Gary Lewis), Virginia (Schleicher), Kentucky (Louis Bergonzi), North Dakota (Bergonzi), Tennessee (Bergonzi), Utah (Bergonzi), Nevada (Schleicher), Massachusetts (Bergonzi), Illinois (Bergonzi), Wisconsin (Bergonzi), and Georgia (Bergonzi), as well as by the Wisconsin Youth Symphony (James Smith) and the University of Illinois Philharmonia (Bergonzi).

Despite the fact that festival orchestras often tend to be quite large, I believed that what would best serve the students would be music that is as intimate - as much like chamber music - as possible, demanding musical independence and creatively expressive playing.  The piece features an extended section in which individual instruments and sections perform a series of developing and overlapping solo cantabile melodies.

Originally published by Cambium Music Publications, this piece has been available in the past as rental materials only.  By special arrangement with Cambium Music Publications/Subito Music, I am very pleased that I can now offer the complete materials through Paul Seitz Music Publications.
