This piece was commissioned by harpist Elizabeth Cifani, principle harp of
the Chicago Lyric Opera, for premiere with the Chicago String Ensemble, Alan
Heatherington, music director. It is composed for wire-strung Irish harp, a
prominent concert instrument in Ireland until the early 19th century. This is
one of the first pieces of concert music to be composed for this stunningly
beautiful instrument since that time. In homage to the historic conflicts among
the citizens of both Ireland and the United States, the title comes from an image
employed in an inaugural address by Abraham Lincoln as he pleaded with his
countrymen to choose peace rather than civil war:
“ I am loath to close. We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies.
Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.
The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot
grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell
the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be,
by the better angels of our nature.”
